The State Opera began as a German theatre in a Neo-Rococo building in 1887. It was intended as competition to the Czech National Theatre and did its job. Until 1892 Smetana was the director of the State Opera, then in 1945 it became Prague's main opera house. The State Opera holds concerts Tuesday through Sunday all year long.
