The southern part of the Charles Square is closed with the
complex of buildings of the Faculty (earlier Common) hospital,
former Ústav šlechtičen and the well-known Faust
House with beautiful baroque gate made by K. I. Dienzenhofer
in 1740. In its upper part there is a sculpture of St John of Nepomuk
and in the garden there take place regular horticultural
exhibitions.
The legend of the Faust House
In the year 1590 bought this house Eduard Kelly, the famous
alchemist of the Emperor Rudolf II and in 1724 it come to Josef
Mladotafrom Solopysk, also a great fan of mechanic and alchemy.
He made entertainments to his guests by various hocus focuses
and he was regarded as a magician. The legend says, that here lived
also famous doctor Faust, who sighed on his soul for a devil and in
return for this he could evoke the ghosts and make gold from the dirt.
Since the Faust has been carried away by the devil through the hole
in the ceiling, there the house became haunted and nobody
wanted to sleep there overnight.
