Located on the Old Town Square is the Astronomical Clock as well as the Church of Our Lady before Tyn, built in the 14th century. The structure of the Tyn cathedral was designed in the late Gothic style, replacing the early Gothic style of the previous Church of Our Lady on the same grounds, built in 1256. The Old Town Square is known for the events that happened at the location. The location has been used for many executions as well as inaugurations and welcomings. In 1945 the old town square was where the soviet armies were welcomed as well as in 1968 when crowds bombarded the soviet tanks for crushing the dreams of the “Prague Spring”. In earlier times many leaders of state as well as leaders of churches were beheaded at the Old Town Square.

Today the square is used for festivals such as Christmas Market as well as Spring Market and New Year celebrations. Often it also shows soccer (football) games on huge television screens. In between festivals it is a common attraction and the best place to catch a horse-drawn carriage.
