The Carolinum stands beautifully as a mark of Prague's colorful history. Although this building might not look like much from the outside its the history and alumni that make the Carolinum a very important part of Prague and Bohemia.
Today, the Carolinum stands as one of the oldest universities in Europe. This university was founded by Charles IV in April 1348. Because the Corolinum is not large enough to house all of faculties, Charles University has expanded all over Prague. In fact, it has always been rather large. In 1882, Charles university was divided into a Czech university and German university. It wasn't until the first world war when the German university became popular. With graduates such as Albert Einstein, and Franz Kafka, the German university's student population more than doubled. The Czech university also has its share of popular alumni, for example, the last King of Austria and Emperor of Bohemia graduated from the Carolinum in 1922.
