The Royal Crown - one of the most significant Czech crown jewels – might be permanently placed in Husova Street, Prague. Naturally, it would be a copy, but even a copy costs almost one million CZK.
The copy of the Royal Crown has been commissioned by the Central Bohemian Region. However, it will not be placed in Karlątejn, as was the intention of the former leaders of the region, but in a tourist infocentre in Husova Street, Prague. It should be part of an exposition on Central Bohemia in Medieval times which will be housed in the basement of the historical building, as the governor of Central Bohemia, David Rath, informed journalists today.
"Karlątejn is an extremely popular monument and I do not think it needs any more promoting. As I have repeatedly said, Karlątejn promotes itself and every Czech citizen should visit the place several times in their lifetime and most foreign tourists should come and see it, too," said the governor.
The region will pay approximately 800,000 CZK to have the crown done. It was commissioned by its previous leadership.
Central Bohemian Regions wants to build a vast infocentre in Husova Street, Prague, including a shop with a selection of Central Bohemian beers and wines, foodstuffs and objects of art linked to the region. Also the Romanesque underground with a part of an ancient bridge should be open to the public. This is exactly where the copy of the crown is intended to be placed.
Originally, it was thought that the crown would be permanently displayed in Karlątejn and it would be transported to Prague Castle once a year as a part of the two-day Royal Procession. During the event, imitations of imperial jewels have been transported by people with costumes of the period. The region has been organizing this event for the last two years but does not intend to carry on with it. "The two-day journey costs 12 million CZK, which is far too much," said Rath.
Some mayors from around Beroun have said that they might organize the event themselves. "If municipalities want to take over the contract for 12 million crowns, we will be glad to pass it on to them straight away," said Rath. He added that the region has been negotiating with the agency that organizes the procession in order to terminate the contract, yet so far no agreement has been made.
