Ice-Skating and Skiing in Prague
2009-12-09 23:09:36

The ice-skating rink in Ovocný Trh was opened by the Mayor of Prague, Pavel Bém, dressed up as a devil.

The City together with Prague 1 had prepared this facility, which will remain open free of charge until 6th January. What is more, every Saturday afternoon the ice rink will change into a disco venue. Skates can be rented on spot for 50 CZK. The City of Prague supported the ice-rink with one million crowns.

Warm weather is not a problem

More than thirty thousand Praguers made use of the rink last year. Although the temperatures do not reach far below zero, the rink can stay in operation, due to its new, more effective system.

Ice-skating in Na Františku

The football pitch on Na Františku school grounds has changed into ice. Children up to the age of 15 from schools in Prague 1 have skating lessons that are included in their curriculum for free. In all other cases, the admission is 50 per adult and 30 per child. The rink can also be rented for 2000CZK/hour. The ice-rink will be open until the end of the season, although it could be closed temporarily under exceptional weather conditions.

Bronzová Stadium

The school winter stadium Bronzová in Prague 13 opened its ice-skating season on 17th November. The stadium is likely to stay open until the end of March, depending on the weather. There are three small changing rooms for about 15 people and a bigger one for about 30 people, showers and vending machines selling food and drinks. Admission is 50 CZK/ adult/hour,  with every hour it decreases by ten crowns.

Skating on plastic

Artificial ice made of suitable plastic is not as fast as the real ice but it can be pleasant for those who go ice-skating just to relax. One such rink can be found at Arkády, Pankrác. The rink has been prepared by Prague 4 for the duration of the Christmas period, which ends on Three Kings Day.

Other possibilities of ice-skating in Prague

An open-air ice-rink is being prepared in Gutovka. The organizers are waiting for more favourable weather; the rink is expected to open on 21st December. Just like in Ovocný Trh, there will be weekly discos organized on Fridays. Unlike many other rinks, Gutovka ice-rink will also be open on Christmas Eve and on New Year’s Eve. Here is a list of other stadiums offering public ice-skating: Štvanice, Nikolajka, ICE Arena Letňany,Výstavišě Praha,Vokovice Winter Stadium, Folimanka, Konstruktiva in Mikuleckého Street.

Yellow Spa awaiting colder weather

Just like every year, Yellow Spa is preparing for the winter season. So far, this year’s weather has not been very favourable but a snow gun has been prepared to create an almost one-kilometre-long cross-country skiing track and a little hill for sledging. “But we need temperatures to stay about five degrees below zero for at least three days,” said Hana Tietze, spokesperson for Taiko, which runs the spa. Another snow gun is planned to be used in Riegrovy Sady, Prague 2.

First Tour de Ski, then Praguers

The cross-country skiing race Tour de Ski (formerly Pražská Lyže, now Ski Sprint Prague) will be held on 4th January in Strahov between the two stadiums. The track will be 1.3 km long and at least nine metres wide and will use approximately 1 600 cube metres of artificial snow. When the race has finished, the circuit will be at the disposal of Praguers.
