This is the second time Prague City Hall is holding the project called the Week of Sport for Free. Between Friday 25th December and Thursday 31st January, Praguers can enjoy selected sport facilities free of charge.
Praguers will be able to enjoy a rich variety of sports facilities and activities such as: swimming pools, ice rinks, fitness centres, football, floorball, beach volleyball, squash, table tennis and aerobics. Last year the project celebrated a big success with about 15 thousand people making use of various facilities. This year there will be even more to choose from.
Swimming pool or stadium?
Visitors can enjoy any of the following swimming pools: Slavie, Hloubětín, Podolí, Strahov, Tyršův dům, Incheba, Radlice and Ymca. Additionally, they can choose to relax in the aqua centres Lagoon Letňany or AquaDream Barrandov, which offer not only swimming but also toboggans, a wild river with artificial countercurrent, a whirlpool (water and air bubble massage), massage jets, water spouts an other attractions.
Regarding winter stadiums, Praguers can visit Ice Arena Letňany, as well as stadiums Hvězda, Kobra, Nikolajka and USK Has, where they can enjoy ice-skating on the 60 x 30 m big ice rink, free of charge. Children up to 12 years of age can skate on the rink that belongs to DDM HMP in Karlín, and is located right in the court of Karlín’s Spektrum building.
Operation of individual sports facilities will be regulated in case of any facility being filled to its full capacity. In such cases, visitors have to be patient and wait for their turn. Individual sports facilities have different capacities. For example, the swimming pool Slavia can be visited by around 80 people per hour, and visitors will receive single-use ticket valid for 2 hours. Some swimming pools will ask for 100 CZK deposit for locker keys.
Telephone reservation of sports facilities
Praguers can engage in sport activities also in fitness centres and gyms that belong under DDM Hobby centre 4 or DDM HMP and in Stadion mládeže (Youth Stadium), where you can also play table tennis.
Floorball players and footballers can enjoy their favourite sporting activities in the sports facility Hamr-Sport Braník. At least one day prior their visit, they have to make a telephone reservation by calling the number 244 462 467. Floorball space can be hired on the spot for CZK 50 plus a deposit of CZK 1000 is required.
Additionally, Floorball fans can visit the public training session that will be held in the covered hall of Youth Stadium in Kotlářka and led by the coaches of the most successful Czech floorball team Tatran Střešovice. Another option is to head to the new hall of ZŠ Barrandov where coaches of SSK Future’s A-teams are in charge of the sessions. Visitors have to make telephone reservations prior to their visit.
On Sunday 27th December, all those interested can sweat out any festive excess with a game of squash to the Squash centre in Strahov. All six courts will be available between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Three courts can be used from 3 p.m. till 10 p.m. Visitors have to make telephone reservations prior to their visit by calling the number 723 763 154 (contact person: Mr Zádrapka). You can hire a ball for CZK 15 and a racquet for 50 Kč. The facility Beachclub Strahov, which boasts a unique hall with heated sand, offers three beach volleyball courts between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and one from 3 p.m. till 10 p.m. Once again, a telephone reservation is necessary prior to visit by calling the number 724 888 708 (contact person: Mr. Maier). Visitors can hire a ball for CZK 40 per hour.
Sparta Praha offers judo and table tennis lessons in the facility Podvinny mlýn. Those interested in aerobics can enjoy their favourite type of stretching with the World and Europe Master David Huf. Children with parents can do some exercises in the sports hall in Letna.
