Eigasai for a Third Time
2010-01-25 13:32:01

Between 22nd and 28th January, Prague cinema Lucerna hosts Eigasai 2010, the third year of the Festival of Contemporary Japanese Film and Culture. Apart from movies, visitors can look forward to a rich accompanying programme. As in previous years, the festival will once again feature a unique collection of contemporary Japanese movies made in the last decade, many of which have gained exceptional public acclaim in their place of origin, some of them even winning prestigious awards. In spite of their success there is generally just a slim chance of these outstanding movies being screened on general international release.

Seeing the world from many viewpoints

So what is it that makes Japanese cinematography so unique? Time after time, experts have argued that it is the same quality that is also characteristic for Japanese life philosophy.  Every image is naturally observed from several viewpoints. Events as well as seemingly inviolable universal truths make sense only when viewed on the basis of individual human experience.

Accessible cinematography

However, in no case are the movies screened examples of cinematographic extremism, most of which are often almost unbearable for European audiences.  Even though all the movies featured in the Festival are original and thought-provoking, they are still accessible to a wide public. Czech subtitles have once again been crafted with high precision and on top of that they have been supplemented by English subtitles this year, opening the gates of the Festival to cinema goers who speak neither Japanese nor Czech.

Japanese Day

Visitors can look forward to a rich accompanying programme featuring theatre performances, exhibitions, workshops, music happenings etc. The main part comes in the form of Japanese Day held in Lucerna on Saturday 23rd January. Further details, information about movies and tickets as well Festival passes can be found at the Festival website.
