This tooth-chattering subzero weather may be inhospitable for most of us but it is fantastic news for all ice-skating fanatics who can now skate to their hearts content at several places specifically designed for this icy winter pursuit; one such spot is the sports facility of Gutovka in Strašnicích.
These seriously minus zero temperatures have made it possible for ice-skating in Gutovka to be extended to seven days a week; as the premises uses naturally formed ice it should be used immediately as it is available on a here today and may be gone tomorrow basis. The skating rink is located conveniently close to Strašnická metro station. Until further notice the opening hours are between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. “Skaters can flex their ice-bound talents on 400 m3 of maintained ice area either in free form ice-skating or enter the more physical fray of ice hockey matches, this is available well into the evening hours as the place is well lit in the evenings. I would like to invite everyone to try the skating rink out,” invites Matěj Dunka, director of the sport facility Gutovka.
Refreshment available
Visitors pay CZK 50 for one and half hour at Gutovka, children have 50 % discount with little ones up to 125 cm being able to skate for free. You can also hire the skates directly at the premises and warm yourself up with a hot drink or food which can be purchased there. Some other sport activities, including a climbing wall, are also available in covered halls.
Na Františku also possible
Another place that acts as a magnet to ice-skaters throughout the week is na Františku in Old Town. The premises belong to Prague 1, here the ice is artificial and also very well-maintained. Entrance fee for adults is czk 50 korun, czk 30 for children, with the option of various discounts. For further details click here. The best option to reach Na František is by the bus n 133.
Na Vltavě but at your own risk
Naturally, severe winter conditions lure intrepid ice-skating daredevils to try different stretches of the Vltava River. Albeit that some parts are maintained, skaters should be fully aware of the risks involved, the most pertinent one being that falling through ice can result in a very quick and numbing death!
