Having a Ball with Angélique
2010-01-30 19:03:51

The Opera Ball of Prague, this year held on 6th February, will feature prominent guests, music and charities. The brightest star of the evening is expected to be in the lithe and sensual form of French actress Michèle Mercier, known from the movies about the heartthrob heroin Angélique. The musical score will be taken care of by Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Opera Ball Orchestra and Gustava Brom’s Big Band.

  • 28. January 2010

Apart from the French actress who stared as the famously risqué Angélique, the event may proudly boast the presence of such stunning models  Andrea Vere¹ová and Pavlína Nìmcová and possibly also fashion designer Osman Laffita. Other luminaries of the Czech and Slovak film industry such as Filip Renè and Juraj Jakubisko are also likely to grace the scene. Based on the latest breaking news, one very special guest is also expected, the Mayor of Vienna Michael Häupl no less.

Disco on offer

The Ball will be officially launched by Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Ballet Prague with choreography by Petr Jirsa at 10 p.m. At the stroke of midnight the tempo will transform and the DJs will start raising the disco pulse in the theatre foyer and in the early hours you can enjoy an uplifting performance of the Cuban and Czech band Pragasón.

Tickets are still available

Tickets to the Ball cost between CZK 3.750 and CZK 12.500, gentlemen are expected to be attired in full tuxedo and ladies in long ball gowns. Based on the organiser’s information, about 550 tickets have been sold with only 300 still available. The first 350 guests will receive a gift in the form of a luxury face cream and a mocca cup is waiting for 800 ticket holders.

Charity tombola

The Prague Ball’s programme will also feature a charity tombola, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Czech Red Cross organisation. Last year the funds raised were given to the foundation of model Tereza Maxova; she received 265.000 CZK that she used for orphanage children aid.

Some history

The State Opera hosted the very first ball of its kind that took place in 1948. According to organisers, the event met with a significant world response. In 1949 the Balls ceased to be held until 1992 when German conductor Friedemann Riehle resurrected its interrupted tradition and the event received enthusiastic press abroad. Wiener Kurier even wrote: “The ‘big brother’ in Vienna will have to work hard to keep pace with its relative in Prague.” The grand event immediately gained many supporters and opponents. It was, over the years, attended by many entrepreneurs, diplomats and aristocrats with entrepreneur Tomá¹ Ba»a, even actors Alain Delon or Peter Ustinov have put in an appearance.
