n many parts of the City, Mardi Gras will open the season of the year which culminates with Easter.
Usually the biggest Mardi Gras celebrations are organized in Žižkov, where the Carnival Season starts on 13th February in Palác Akropolis. This will be the venue for a fancy-dress ball for children and for the concert of Laura a Její Tygři band and Prince Alfredo & Warriors formation in the evening. The programme will continue on Sunday with a feast in the pub U Vystřelenýho Oka and with a children’s afternoon in the House of Children and Youth in Balkán.
Culmination - carnival parade
The carnival parade is the culmination of Žižkov Mardi Gras celebrations. This year, it will be held on 16th February. Luckily, the organizers abandoned the idea to invite dodgy stars from Vyvolení reality show and returned to good old traditions, meaning that at the head of the procession will be Jan Žižka, the first Mayor of Žižkov, Karel Hartig, Knights of Blaník and many others. A special treat will be the carnival ensemble from Studnice near Hlinsko in the Highlands, which already provided great entertainment last year.
Fair in the Old Town Square
The fair in the Old Town Square will take place until the beginning of March. The programme will be carried out in a traditional Czech style - pig-slaughtering delicacies and folk entertainment from 11th February until 3rd March. The three-week event will offer good traditional food and an interesting programme.
Music and parade.
The Old Town Square Fair organizers will present folk performances and accordion concerts. The city centre will be full of old Czech songs and dulcimer music. The traditional parade will take place on Tuesday 16th February. “People wearing masks will gather in the Old Town Square at 4 p.m. and, accompanied by music, they will entertain all the passers-by. This time it will follow the purely folk tradition with corresponding masks and costumes,” said Henri Morstyn, Taiko’s Programme Manager.
Where else will Mardi Gras be celebrated?
Besides Žižkov and the Old Town Square, Mardi Gras will be held in the following parts of the city:
- In Karlín at Karlínské Spektrum, on 20th February.
- In Toulcův Dvůr, on 13th February.
- In Barikádníků House, on 16th February – an afternoon with Carnival masks.
- In Břevnov, a parade on 16th February.
Mardi Gras will also be celebrated outside Prague, e.g. on Saturday 13th February in Zadní Třebaň and on 20th February in Srbsko.
