On 3rd February, the world-famous painter Zdeněk Sýkora reached the considerable age of 90.
After the Soviet occupation, it became a habit that the best did not have much opportunity to hold exhibitions, so the only signs of Zdeněk Sýkora’s work were two realizations from the second half of the 1960’s. The first one was the facework on air shafts by the architect Josef Kales at the Letená Tunnel, the second one, the ceramic wall at the Polish Cultural Centre in Jindřiąská Street right at the entrance to the metro (today Emporium Café).
Second cross-section of his work
Zdeněk Sýkora lived to see his second retrospective exhibition in 1995, i.e. 25 years after the first one, which had been held in ©pála Gallery in 1970 and had a tinge of something banned. In 1995, it was the Prague City Gallery that held the exhibition and presented Sýkora in the Municipal Library. It was a cross-section of his work, as of the beginning of his career, Sýkora was inspired by surrealism and cubism and it was not until later that he moved to abstraction. Abstraction is the theme of the second exhibition organized by the Prague City Gallery, which will again be held in the Municipal Library. It presents its linear paintings, structures and works created on the basis of coincidence. The exhibition will be held from 19th February to 20th May.
Tireless creator
At the age of 90, a person should be entitled to a rest, yet Zdeněk Sýkora is not such a person. He is still active so it comes as no surprise that he made an appearance and received an award at the Vladimír Boudnik Award Ceremony for the year 2008, at the age of 89. Before that, he had received a number of awards but always outside the Czech Republic. In France, for instance, he had been awarded the title of Knight of Order of Arts and Letters, in Austria he received Herbert-Boeckl-Preis. By the way, he also has a painting in the permanent collection of the Parisian Centre Pompidou, where it is a rare thing to see a Czech artist exhibited.
