Night Exoticism in Fata Morgána
2010-03-06 14:38:11

From January until the end of March, Prague Botanic Garden welcomes everyone to join its unique night walks. Visitors in groups will be accompanied by a guide with a light, who will show them flowers in bloom at a time when other Prague’s educational institutions are fast asleep.

The tour of Fata Morána is divided into three parts – the first part takes visitors to the area of Madagascar, Mexico and Africa. When the visitors have seen the fish, they will proceed to the humid tropics of South America, Australia and Oceania. The last part focuses on the high mountains of America, Asia and Africa.

The tour, which takes a little less than an hour, has a peculiar atmosphere: it takes a while for your eyes to get used to the dark, however, thanks to the guide, you can see the most important things and learn how many banana species there are, where coccus came from or why people use bamboo in building industry.

Prague Botanic Garden also makes use of sound effects. This is why visitors at one time feel the imminent danger of a storm or on the contrary enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of waterfalls and croaking frogs. The night visit is a physical experience – scent, sounds in the dark, plants that might seem almost dangerous and what is more, suddenly you can witness the appearance of plastic objects by Veronika Richterová depicting real and imaginary flora and fauna.

Due to different temperatures in different parts of Fata Morgána, varying from 10 to 26 °C, visitors can relive the feeling of something that they already knew. This is how they might have felt on holidays in an exotic country, when at night, they were looking for a place to pitch a tent.

The walks are held every Friday from  7 p.m., full admission is 150 CZK, children are half price. The walks will be held until the end of March, since after that the light does permit a night visit with all its magical power.

However, there is bad news: Night walks of Fata Morgána are already fully booked. They will start again in November. Until then, you have the chance to visit the garden during its daytime opening hours – Note that Fata Morgána will be closed for technical reasons from 1st to 5th March.
