Some of you may already know that Capital City of Prague recently started organising farmers markets, which have quickly gained huge popularity. Now they take place in virtually all big districts and their number has been growing and growing.
Prague 2 has also joined in, it holds the markets on the traditional market place in front of St Ludmila Church, from18th June. The first one to open its market was Prague 6, where people have already got used to the event and the place sees many citizens of other districts also.
“They are close to my metro stop and I therefore manage both,” said Jitka Urbanová from Prague 1, and added, “What I also like is that what is on offer is so varied.”
From Fish to cheese and vegetables
Every week people can buy live fish on Vltavy Embankment, where a new farmers market Náplavka is located between Palackého Square and Železniční Bridge. These markets are held by the Archetyp organisation, which has also launched similar markets in Prague 10. For example you can buy trout and many other fish here.
Vegetable mainly from the Elbe Valley
Small growers from the Elbe Valley are selling their goods in Prague 6, Holešovice Market in Prague 7 and other places. In Holešovice Market you can buy meat, bakery goods, cheeses and wine in front of hall 22. Prague 5 holds its markets every Friday on Anděl.
Also on outskirts
Farmers markets can be found also in smaller Prague’s villages, such as Klánovice and Dolní Počernice. Czech towns Kladno and Pilsen have also joined in.
Market top hits
One undoubted hit is the superb Czech garlic which tastes and smells just so much better than other types many of which are imported from as far distant shores as China. Other very popular produce is Czech turkey meat from local farms, local sausages, and a mouth-watering selection of goats and other cheeses, all of which brings more choice at affordable prices. Customers also buy products from local bakeries, from producers of traditional goods such as basket makers and others. Other interesting goods are bio wines from Czech wine-vineyards.
Karlín next
For the first time, markets will be held in Karlín on 10th July between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., close to St Cyril and Method Church. Because other city districts are interested in markets as well, it can be expected that they will become a frequent feature of our urban landscape.
