An exhibition in Prague shows fish from the Vltava, which Praguers know of even less than sharks and morays.
The unique baroque vault of Kinsky Palace in the Old Town Square hides fish probably less known to the inhabitants of Prague than sea fish.
“It is my conviction that we have had enough of sharks and morays and that people should also see what lives here,” said Jiří Rachfalík, promoter and creator of similar aquaria. Most people know mostly fish from the market, such as carp or pike, but much fewer people know what loach, minnow, burbot or bitterling look like.
Exposition to expand
At present, the exhibition entitled Under the Vltava Surface numbers 22 species of fish. This is where you will find e.g. a sterlet, which used to be common in Prague. Nowadays, it can be found in the Danube and sometimes even in the Morava River.
“We will gradually expand the exhibition until we have all the 32 species of fish that live in the Vltava. We will also offer a view of fish which pass through the Vltava, such as salmons,” said Mr. Rachfalík
Fish nativity scene
The new exhibition in Kinsky Palace also offers small refreshments and various accompanying events are being prepared. There will also be concessions for school groups. The most unique thing of the project is going to be a fish nativity scene.
“It will be a two-metre high carved statues, which are presently being put together by several carvers from Podkrkonoší, Jablunkov, South Bohemia and Poland. It will be presented at Advent,” said Mr. Rachfalík.
