Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best influenced the legendary band The Beatles at times when they had not yet taken the leading position in the hit parade.
Most popular Beatle
While Stuart Sutcliffe, who came up with the name Beatles, died as a result of a fight in the Grosvenor club , Pete Best, in his time the most popular Beatle, was dismissed in 1962 by the new manager Brian Epstein (allegedly due to production pressure). This happened despite protests from a great number of the fans – girls, who loved Pete Best and ambushed the stage.
Comeback twenty years later
Pete Best played in Lee Curtise The All Stars and then with his own band. After he got married he spent his time with his family. Twenty years ago, the today sixty-eight year-old Best started again to play in the Liverpool bigbeat style of the 1960‘s. He came to Prague on the occasion of the Beatlemania exhibition in the Czech Museum of Music, where his fans could hear him on 29th June.
He does not speak much with the others
“I came to Prague to support the connection between your city and Liverpool and also because I wanted to sign Lennon’s Wall,” said Pete Best at a press session in Rockcafe. He lit a candle in memory of Lennon.
“John was a fantastic chap with a great sense of humour. He was very young, when he influenced the world,” he said about his friend. Otherwise he did not keep in touch with other members of the Beatles. Last time he saw Ringo Star who replaced him was sometime in 1962 and he is not in touch with Paul McCartney.
Hamburg was the cradle of success
Best was the star at the beginning of the career of the Beatles. He mostly stood out in Hamburg, where the Beatles played in local clubs, even seven hours a day. According to Best, it was exactly what made the Beatles a great band. “If there had not been Hamburg, The Beatles might not have had such success,” said Best.
