This year summer in Prague Zoo is shaping up to be a very interesting season. Zoo employees are preparing ice-cream for bears to remind them, they are indeed ice hopping polar bears, and meanwhile frisky lizards engage in sex.

Ice-cream twice a week

The actual ice-cream is made of vegetable and fish and is not to everyone’s taste, but bears love it. If you want to see bears gorging on it, head to the Zoo on Tuesday or Friday morning when this delicacy is served along with other titbits.

“Greenland ice-lollies, as we call them, are a real treat and happily playing bears are a great attraction for visitors,” said the Zoo spokeswoman Ptačinská Jiráková.

Visitors will find refreshment as well

Of course, Prague Zoo thinks of its visitors as well. In the course of hot summer days they can refresh themselves under special sprinklers. Recently two more sprinklers have been added to the four original ones. They are to be found at the playground by the café Černohouska, by the  Przewalski's Horse enclosure next to the pavilion of big cats, at the meadow in the kids zone, by the U Rotschilda refreshment (on the way to the African House) and by the u Supa refreshment (by the south Zoo entrance).

How Komodo dragons celebrate summer

Two of the adult Komodo dragons are adding a bit of reptilian style “frisson” to the zoo and are currently courting. Courtship was initiated by Aranka the female, who laid her first batch of eggs in February. The eggs have yet to hatch into small Komodo dragons, but Aranka is not one to be wasting time and is already showing an interest in shimmying scales with the male lizard Leonardo. He is the new dragon on the block having been brought to Prague from Pilsen in February to replace previous deceased male.

“In the course of recent years, Aranka came into season only once a year. With the arrival of this new and seemingly highly desirable suitor, she is on heat for the second time this year,” said the Zoo keeper responsible for lizards, Petr Velenský. It is not clear quite how the courting going to develop. However what is strikingly obvious is that Leonardo is now in seduction mode and has set aside his more macho persona   preferring instead the scaly delights of Aranka.
