Three months, three exclusive stars of the jazz scene – saxophonist Jan Garbarek, pianist Brad Mehldau and vocalist Dianne Reeves – will adorn Prague’s autumn musical season.
Just as in the past years, the upcoming 15th international music festival the Strings of Autumn, from 19th September until 21st November, will present the world’s top jazz interpreters. Each month will bring one jazz “treat“. The festival’s opening on 19th September will belong to Jan Garbark with the Hilliard Ensemble vocal quartet and the first presentation of their latest record Officium Novum in the CR. The National Monument in Vítkov will resonate with medieval church music with an almost metaphysical dialogue between sacredly trained voices and Garbark’s saxophone. On 26th October, the excellent interpreter - pianist Brad Mehldau, is likely to lose forever his reputation of a “naughty child“. The first time he performed at the Strings of Autumn was four years ago. This time he will perform in the Municipal House together with the opera singer Anne Sofie von Otter in the first Czech night of a project looking into the world of classical, jazz and pop music, which was commissioned by Carnegie Hall in New York.
Just as the opening, the closing of the festival will be marked by the syncopated rhythm with a grandiose concert by the prominent jazz vocalist and a four-time holder of the Grammy Award Dianne Reeves on 21st November. She will be accompanied by her jazz trio and exclusively also by the Prague Chamber Philharmonic. “All three evenings will be a proof of how varied contemporary jazz can be and how contemporary jazzmen can be open to various influences. I have no doubts that the audience will appreciate the varied faces of contemporary jazz, whether it will be Garbarek’s medieval jazz, Mehldau’s classical music trips or the elegant homage to Sarah Vaughan by Dianne Reeves,” said Marek Vrabec, the Artistic Director of the festival.
