On Saturday 28th August 2010, Podviní Park in Vysočany offers you the option to taste the world for free. Starting at 2 p.m., the park will host the sixth year of “Colourful Ninth” alias Ethnofest.

From 2 p.m., you can inhale the scents, savour the tastes and take delight in the melodies from four continents. This is a cultural kaleidoscope of the world.  You will be able to truly saturate your senses in the myriad of brilliant dancers and musicians from faraway shores as well as those closer to home. Tease your taste buds on the mouth-watering cuisine from various countries and buy many unique and exotic objet de art. For children there will be many fun competitions and interactive workshops. Adults will surely enjoy the heady international cocktail of musicians that will culminate in the musical exuberances of the one and only Gipsy.cz band. As in previous years, the event is free of charge.

The liveliest attraction will be the traditional evening concerts. The main star of this year’s line-up is the band GIPSY.CZ, which will no doubt rough up the turf with their full power Romano hip-hop. The band’s high voltage mixture of rap, Roma music, funk, ethno and pop managed to also stir the Eurosong’s audience.

The band CCTV ALL STARS brings together musicians from Bohemia, America, Sweden, Mexico and UK creating an ass stomping mix of various music styles. Their energetic folk-rock and ska reggae gyrates even the most tepid wallflower onto the dance floor. Another band, CHICO DÍAZ ORQUESTA SALSABORRR from the Doninican Republic deliver their own high octane musical mixer, a similarly energetic style but this time with salsa, meringue, Latino pop and jazz, shake vigorously do not stir….

It’s not only the podium but also the whole park area that will come into full cultural bloom. About twenty nations will introduce what is best in their countries.  You can dip into a Tibetan print workshop, have your hair done African style, learn the ropes of Salsa and Chasid dance or try your hand at drumming in southern rhythms with one of our most distinguished percussionists, Miloš Vacík.

Fellow gourmets will surely appreciate their cousins from Angola, Bulgaria, China, the Dominican Republic, Ghana, Georgia, Lebanon, Moldavia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Ukraine or Vietnam. In the tent representing various countries you can learn about each of them and get some unique hand-made traditional goods that you wouldn’t be able to buy anywhere else.

“We have been holding the Ethnofest in Vysočany Park now for the sixth year running and are pleased that the event has become so popular not only among the residents of Prague 9. We are proud that foreigners and minorities from all over the Czech Republic meet together at this festival. Podviní Park transforms into a truly colourful nook of the city,” said councillor of Prague 9 Adam Vážanský.

The festival enjoys great popularity also among children who can look forward to the game “Around the world in one hour” for its attractive prizes that will go on throughout the whole festival.

On top of that, they can spend the whole afternoon playing in the workshop of DDM Prague 9 or have a fling enjoying the great attractions of the Free Time Centre. Those who are not afraid of heights can visit the nearby funicular centre that offers entrance discounts for the festival day. In the meantime, adults can sample the taste of the best rums from the Dominican Republic or watch what is going on at the stage. In the course of the afternoon the programme will feature for example Indian, Roma and Ukrainian dances, Jewish or Vietnamese music, an African fashion show or Angolan show. The evening programme will culminate by the fire show by Fantasmagoria.
