At the end of this week, Prague will commemorate the fateful events that tragically changed the course of Czechoslovakian history 42 years ago – the Warsaw Pact Amy invasion. Prague will see several significant events.
Obelisk for the first live torch
On Friday 20th August, at 12 noon, will be revealed the obelisk dedicated to Ryszard Siwiec, who burned himself to death in a defiant martyrs protest against the occupation of Czechoslovakia. The moment of remembrance will be held in Siwiec Street.
A documentary movie about Ryszard Siwiec called Hear My Cry will be screened in the Polish institute on 19th August at 6 p.m. The screening will be concluded by a discussion with the director Maciej Drygas and historian Petr Blažek.
In the heart of resistance
Civic association Publicum commodum and City district Prague 1 are jointly holding a commemorative event on 21st August from 2.30 p.m., which is meant mainly for kids. The lower part of Wenceslas Square will see an inspiring kaleidoscope of performances by artists, singers and visitors that are closely tied to the 1968 August fateful events.
Visitors can look forward to the band J.J.Jazzmen with singers Josef Bažík Pavelka and Petra Vlkova, Vlasta Třešňák Band, singer Jan Burian, Luboš Andršt Blues Band. The organisation Post Bellum will introduce its project We Didn’t Give Up. All participants will lay flowers by Jaa Palach and Jan Zajíc monuments in the upper part of Wenceslas Square. A rich programme and refreshment has been prepared for families with children.
Graffiti artists against occupation
The Invasion Festival held between Friday 20th and Sunday 22nd August can serve as a proof that our young generation doesn’t forget either. The event presents the events of 21st August from a slightly different perspective.
“The aim of the Invasion Festival is to transform the dark and harsh heritage of 21st August into a positive celebration of freedom, and an invasion of art. We would like to point to the questions of personal choice, personal identity, gender and body mutations with the help of new technologies, hacking and personal internet security or ambivalence of social and political roles in our pre-apocalyptic age,” says the festival’s programme.
Meetings will be held in three Prague galleries: Trafačka Palace, Českomoravská 213 + Kurta Konrada 1, Prague 9, The Chemistry Gallery, U Kanálky 4, Prague 3, and Ferdinada Baumanna Galery, Štěpánská pasáž, Štěpánská street 36, Prague 1
