On Monday 6th September the 42nd Luboš Tomíček Memorial event will be held in Marketa stadium. The starting line-up in Prague will include the famous Nicky Pedersen who won last year’s Memorial.
Pedersen also has two victories behind him in two penultimate Grand Prix events. Due to current health problems it is by no means certain that Pederson will be able to defend his title from last year.
Czech riders will include Josef Franc, Zdeněk Simota, Matěj Kůs and Luboš Tomíček, the grandson of the tragically deceased speedway rider. Other well-known names include Joonas Kylmäkorpi from Finland, last year’s European Champion Renat Gafurov from Russia and Hungarian rider Matej Ferjan, who won the Luboš Tomíček Memorial in 2004.
The organisers of the event have accepted a change from previous years. The race meeting will be held on Monday because, otherwise, it would clash with final races in the Speedway World Championship and the final of the European Championship in Poland.
“It proved to be the right move, as there is now greater public interest in the competition,” said the Director of the event, Petr Ondrašík. The fact is that many fans actually come to Prague from Poland, where speedway enjoys passionate public support thanks to the great success of Polish riders.
