The showcase of contemporary German film, Das Filmfest, will take over Prague’s Lucerna and Evald cinemas for five days from 19th October. The public can look forward to successful debuts, historical epics, comedy films, cutting dramas, investigative documentaries and to Oscar-aspiring spectacles. Contemporary German, Austrian and Swiss film production is diverse, so again this year, for the sake of clarity, the organisers have had to divide the 26 film showings into four thematic sections: Rebels, On the Threshold, Documentaries and The Wall.
From Lolitas to Goethe
Veiel’s film belongs to the section most attractive to cinema-goers, Rebels, which presents rebellious heroes, characters who have decided to revolt against society or a complicated situation in life. In this section film-fans will also see the lively pop-drama Lollipop Monster, which will be personally introduced at the festival by its debuting director Ziska Riemann. The film tells the story of two non-conformist Lolitas in the urban jungle who form an unusual friendship. The rebelious heroes would not be complete without Goethe!, directed by Philipp Stölzl, which presents the classic of world literature as a young and fiery romantic who revolts against the narrow-minded attitude of his father and society of that time.
Oscar competition for Alois Nebel
One of the highlights of the festival will be a visit by popular Austrian actor Karl Malkovics, who plays Inspector Stockinger in the series Inspector Rex. At this year’s Das Filmfest he presents his directorial debut entitled Breathing, which the Austrian film commission has put into the battle for an Oscar for the best non-English language film, where it will be up against the Czech rotoscope animated film Alois Nebel.
The festival programme is further enriched by other guests in the shape of film directors, producers, actors and other artists. Among others Prague will welcome actor Edgar Selge, film maker Michael Steiner and actress Sarah Horváth. Tickets for festival screenings are on sale in Lucerna and Evald cinemas for 90 CZK or 120 CZK for 3D films. All films will be shown with Czech subtitles, most films also have English subtitles.
