St. Martin Welcomed with Wine and Goose
2011-11-11 10:53:45

St. Martin’s day is exceptional in many ways – the first St. Martin’s wine is opened and St. Martin’s geese are roasted. Prague will not be deprived of any of these treats. Celebrations will take place at Letná and Old Town Square.

The wine festival and welcoming of a white winter begins in Old Town Square on Friday 4th November and goes on until 14th November. The eleven-day St. Martin’s wine-tasting will especially appeal to gourmets. “Visitors to the wine-tasting can look forward to wines from Moravia and Hungary, typical Hungarian cheese and sausage. There will also be hot mead, potato pancakes with sauerkraut and roast goose, or traditional meatloaf in a breadroll. I think this will help to make the cold autumn and the arrival of winter more pleasant for everyone,” said Milan Heidler, CEO of the organising company Taiko, as an invitation to Prague residents and visitors.

Return to tradition

Old Town Square will not be without the sale of sheep’s wool, leather and fur.  It will also be possible to buy products made from honey, hand-made old-bohemian beads and glassware, straw figures and other hand-made items and decorations for the home. The atmosphere of the traditional wine-tasting will be complete with a weaver, who will demonstrate the art of weaving on a loom right in the middle of the square. The accompanying programme will include songs of Old Prague, historical songs and cabaret melodies.

St. Martin is coming on a white horse!

On Friday 11th November in Old Town Square St. Martin will arrive on a white horse. “Visitors to the centre of Prague will have two chances to see St. Martin on a beautiful white horse. He will arrive with his procession for the first time at 2pm and then again at 4pm. Children and adults will certainly enjoy the colourful costumes of jugglers, dancers, historical knights and Roman soldiers,” said Henri Morstyn, programme manager of the St. Martin’s wine-tasting. The public can also look forward to historical sword-fighting and dancing, Roman soldiers in combat and jugglers’ performances.

Wine-tasting and goose at Letná

For the fifth time the National Agricultural Museum has organised a traditional St. Martin’s wine-tasting and goose-roast. The traditional event arranged for 12th and 13th November is combined with displays of old Czech craft and skill, presentations, wine-tasting and sale of gastronomic specialities including products awarded the KLASA  label for Czech products,  tasting St. Martin’s wine and young wines from leading Moravian and Bohemian wine producers, dulcimer music, market stalls in the museum courtyard and a children’s programme. Here, too, St. Martin will come on a white horse. The project is taking place with the support of the Czech Winemakers’ Fund and with the help of Český um – Artificium Bohemicum o. s.
