French Film Festival
2011-11-22 11:30:30

The 14th edition of the French Film Festival presents previews of pictures that have not been shown in the Czech Republic yet, a competition section based on the choice of nine Czech critics, titles produced by Arte France TV chain, film hits and movies remembering the actor Jean Marais. The Prague part of the festival is held from 24th November to 30th November in the following cinemas: Lucerna, Svìtozor and 35 Cinema of the French Institute.

Czech actors in French film

The festival will start on 24th November in the Lucerna Cinema with the film Les Bien-aimés by Christophe Honoré, filmed in Paris, London and Prague. Besides Catherine Deneuve and her daughter Chiara Mastroianni, the film also stars Milo¹ Forman in the role of an aging father. Other Czech actors appear in the film, too, e.g. Pavel Li¹ka, Zuzana Krónerová and Zuzana Onufráková. The end of the festival will present the film L’Apollonide – Souvenirs de la maison close in the presence of its director Bertrand Bonello, which is inspired by a sociological study on Brother in Paris at the end of 19th century.

Films will be presented by their authors

Both films were presented in the main competition of the festival in Cannes and they will not be on the programme of Czech cinemas until 1st December. Another preview will be the La Nouvelle Guerre des boutons by Christophe Barratier following the famous adaptation from the year 1962, and an action film L’Assaut about the hijacking of the Air France airplane and holding hostages at Algiers and  Marseille airports in 1994, which will be presented by its director Julien Leclercq. A special place will be dedicated to the film La Guerre est déclarée by Valérie Donzelli, telling the story of the fight of young parents to save the life of their son diagnosed with cancer. The film was inspired by the author’s autobiography. The director and her partner Jérémie Elkaim also interpret the main roles. The film was successful at the Toronto Festival and also represents France in this year’s Oscar awards. Among the guests of the festival will also be the director Anne Villaceque.

Other films

The selection by Czech critics will include films that have not been bought for Czech distributions and thus have never been shown in the CR. Spectators will have the opportunity to vote for a film which will receive the Audience Award. Another section called film hits includes such films as Three Musketeers, Trier’s Melancholia, Wenders’s Pina, classical films Le Grand amour by Pierre Étaixe and La Double vie de Véronique by Krzysztof Kieslowski. The personality of Jean Marais will be remembered thanks to L’Eternel retour from 1943 and Cocteau’s seven years younger Orphée.

The French Film Festival takes place in other seven towns throughout the republic. All in all, there will be 165 projections of 37 feature films and eight short films in 14 cinemas. As an accompanying event, from the beginning of the month the Lucerna passage presents the works by a cartoonist of the newspaper Le Monde at the exhibition entitled Plantu Draws the World.

Films will be mostly shown in the original versions with Czech subtitles. For more information visit www.festivalff.cz (available only in Czech and French).
