This year’s first film festival is the newly set up Iranian Film Festival, which will be held from Wednesday 11th January to Sunday 15th January in Světozor Cinema. The festival presents films that Praguers have not had a chance to see either on TV or in the cinema and which have received awards at such festivals as Berlinale, Venice Film Festival, Moscow Film Festival and the festival in Cannes.

“The main objective of the festival is to present the Czech audience with contemporary Iranian film productions. We believe that the festival will appeal to the spectators not only for its dramaturgical diversity but also for its quality, depth and unique conception of Iranian filmmakers,“ said the festival’s director Kaveh Daníšmand from Tokada Productions. Thanks to its unique artistic conception and rich history, Iranian cinematography enjoys a considerable amount of attention. The films presented at the festival portray the life in contemporary Iran, especially Tehran.

Relationship in times of Iranian crisis

Perhaps the greatest attraction on the programme is the successful Iranian film entitled Nader and Simin, A Separation by Asghar Farhadi. “This drama from 2011, which has received numerous film awards, will open the festival. This first show also heralds the subsequent introduction of the film at other Czech cinemas, as the story will be shown on screen from mid-February,“ said Barbora Dušková from Smart Communication.

Numerous Film Awards

The above mentioned film , which was already shown at the 46th International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, won the Golden Bear for the best film and the Silver Bear for the best actress at this year’s Berlinale. It also received other important awards, e.g. in San Sebastian, London, Sydney, Melbourne, New York, Oslo and Yerevan. It is also the official Iranian candidate for the best foreign film at the prestigious Oscar Film Awards.
